Tojutsu (刀術) is a Japanese term that translates to the
"art of the sword" or "sword techniques." It specifically refers to the
traditional Japanese martial arts (or "jutsu" meaning technique or
skill) focused on the use of the katana or other Japanese swords
in combat. "To" (刀) refers to a sword, typically a single-edged blade
like the katana.
Tojutsu encompasses techniques and practices related to drawing,
striking, cutting, and blocking with a sword. It is part of broader
sword-based martial arts traditions that have been practiced by samurai.
Japanese blades can be classified according to length.
One
shaku is about 12 inches (30 centimeters).
Blade | | Length |
Daito (tachi or katana) | | Over two shaku |
Shoto or wakizashi | | Between one and two shaku |
Tanto | | Less than one shaku |
